Klättermusen design has always been driven by function. The company was founded in bad winter weather on a steep slope, whilst cursing over Velcro cuffs that had stopped working because they were full of snow and ice, problems with frostbite and problems with zips etc. Our knowledge and our desire to make good garments originate in this kind of experience – as well as from you. Customer feedback is one of our most important sources of knowledge. Klättermusen design has always been in-house, meaning that we never use external designers. The distance between the service department and the design department is less than 5 metres. We have worked this way for the last twenty-three years. Of course, we have also learned a lot about materials and new production techniques over the years, but our goal has always been to make outdoor products more functional and durable. There is an important environmental idea behind this. There is no such thing as an environmentally-friendly garment, but a garment that lasts twice as long has half the environmental impact. Today’s outdoor products have developed towards more style and more finish (at Klättermusen too), but when it comes to safety and protection very little has been achieved. A snowstorm is still a snowstorm and they have changed very little the last twenty years. Going out on a search and rescue mission with a short thin jacket without a wind visor on the hood, an exposed coiled zip on the front and Velcro cuffs is simply not a very good idea. It is chic in the city and works well in most summer situations, but it is not designed for serious use. In many situations weight is very important, as speed is also safety. If you travel light and fast it is often possible to avoid the dangerous situations altogether. Klättermusen was one of the pioneers of lightweight shell clothing in the early 1990s. We are now working on some interesting new projects, in which we are trying to combine low weight and safety in new products. One of the problems is that a lot of abrasion resistance and life-extending design features have to be sacrificed when creating lightweight garments. It’s important that the customer understands that the benefits of low weight can also bring drawbacks in other aspects, and thus that lightweight products are only used for their intended purpose. Then they can last a long time. Klättermusen has always maintained its focus on function, durability, safety and environmentally-friendly products. We carve out our own path in design, material selection and technology and are not driven by the mainstream tendencies that are now so common today and which make it more and more difficult to distinguish between different brands.
